Individual and Family Health Plans
Obtaining health insurance no longer requires medical underwriting or has pre-existing exclusions when enrolling in a plan. The “Open Enrollment Period” is when one can annually shop around and change plans. The window for Open Enrollment is November 1 – December 15. The plan’s coverage begins January 1 and stays in place for the duration of the calendar year.
If an individual and/or family member experiences a “Life Changing Event”, they may be eligible to enroll in a plan outside of the Open Enrollment Period. The is called a “Special Enrollment Period. The Special Enrollment Period is typically open for 60 days after the life changing event occurred. Life Changing Events include:
- Loss of employer group coverage
- Expiration of COBRA benefits
- Marriage or divorce
- Birth or adoption of a child
- Change in residency (moving outside the service area)
- Death of primary insured
